No they are literally sunken 20cm, with the surrounding tarmac making a gradiented drop to meet the lower level, for the surrounding 3 feet.
I think that’s what’s called a ‘forced fall’ where the road vertical alignment is too flat to drain otherwise. Often seen in Lincolnshire.

It's only in an area 0.5msq around the drain cover. The cover was level with the road surface prior to drainage, so it would have made sense to lift the drain cover 15-20cm to meet the new surface.

I have 18" on my 212 E350CDI plus 17" winter wheels, they work well on the 212.
The wife's SLC has 18" originals which are not bad, much improved from the SLK 18" wheels.
I bought a set of 17" all season tyres & wheels which work really well on the SLC in all conditions.
I would not go over 18" in any circumstances.

You should have clarified that by stating this applies to your current cars, because there could be circumstances where you would not follow this rule with other cars that you may own in the future. Think of all possibilities however unlikely. :geek:
I do understand your reasoning, and I would not have said anything if you hadn't added the words 'in any circumstances' :)

I cant see see any occasion why I would need to go above 18", its basically cosmetic.

I can't fit anything smaller than 19", over my front brakes.

Ah, not going into your world! Even my 150BHP motorcycle only has 17" wheels.
I’ve 19” wheels on one bike… ;) (and 16” on the sports one…):cool::p:D

I did say think of all possibilities and not concerning your current cars...it is not difficult to think of a scenario. :)
For example and for whatever reason you buy a car that has standard fit 19" wheels, would you really remove them and fit 18" wheels?
There's no point in saying you would never buy a car with 19" wheels because your circumstances could change...you just never know what is around the corner.

I am only saying all this purely because you originally said you would not go over 18" in any circumstances. :)

Not what i thought then. The highway authority must have overlaid 15-20cm of pavement which is more than resurfacing. Sounds downright dangerous. Left hand and right hand comes to mind.

An old B-Class.
I have just returned from Mercedes Hertford after having my E220 serviced to be told again that both front alloys are cracked. The same thing happened last year and I had them welded by an alloy wheel repairer. The company that welded my wheels stated that he had repaired 12 Mercedes’ 20 inch wheels that month. Today I was given a quote of £2100 to replace my cracked wheels. I then questioned whether Mercedes were aware of this recurring problem and whether the new wheels were strengthened as there must be a fault in the previous alloys and they could not or did not want to confirm. Why would I spend £2100 on new wheels with an obvious weak spot when I can get them welded for a fraction of the price.
Anyone had the same problem .
Once you are out of warranty you will get no joy from MB. I took it to the ombudsmn and was told that unless it is in warranty, I have no claim. My wheels are ~£1500 each and were corroding (no kerb damage - just corroding from the center outwards). Shocking considering that this is known problem (and not only MB according to the refurbisher).

Trouble is, I would have thought all Polished alloys like this, be it oem or aftermarket wheels are going to be susceptible to the White worm, one small chip and the waters in, although have to say polished alloys do look stunning.

Guys that did my wheels said it is not unique to MB. Mine were not chipped. It was coming outward from the hubs on three wheels (never been off the car).

I have to say that I’m much happier with the look on my car now (full powder coat). Never was a fan of the diamond cut look.

I purchased two A35 AMGs which are only a year old, both cars already have cracked alloys, Mercedes have just ignored the situation and the dealer says got to Mercedes direct, I've had many cars now and without a doubt Mercedes have the worst customer service, once you have bought the car they wash there hands with you. I bought a replica set with MO tyres and TPMs for less than you can buy two bare wheels from Mercedes.

Hello and welcome,

Unfortunately it’s not a Mercedes issue, the fashion is for huge alloys and the economy means poor roads. Put them together and you get cracked alloys.

Just to clarify the A35 comes with 19" wheels, but does seem unusual to personally own 2 with cracked alloys.
I suppose if the roads are particularly bad and the cars were previously driven without care then the potential for this to happen would be quite high regardless of make.

Quite agree but my issue is the way Mercedes are dealing with it, although I cannot speak for audi or bmw Mercedes have thrown people under the bus with this one
